MOVTT Partners with San Francisco District Attorney's Office on Justice Reform Initiatives

On behalf of District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Tiffany Sutton, Chief of Collaborative Justice, contacted the Men of Vision Think Tank (MOVTT) on April 11, 2024, expressing interest in our initiatives addressing at-risk youth and substance abuse within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Ms. Sutton sought to evaluate potential alignment between our work and the District Attorney's Office prevention and intervention strategies.

Ms. Sutton further stated that the San Francisco District Attorney's Office maintains a steadfast commitment to criminal justice reform and remains dedicated to developing innovative solutions that enhance public safety for both youth and adult populations.

Motivated by this collaborative opportunity, MOVTT developed a comprehensive proposal demonstrating our dedication to addressing the systemic challenges that impact our correctional facilities and communities.

MOVTT Ready to Collaborate Following DA Jenkins' San Quentin Visit

On March 18, 2025, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins and her team visited San Quentin State Prison to address critical challenges surrounding resentencing procedures and strategies to interrupt the juvenile-to-adult prison pipeline.

In the San Quentin News article, District Attorney Jenkins stated, "It is not always easy to say that you will sit in the room with the district attorney." The Men of Vision Think Tank (MOVTT) respectfully disagrees, believing that meaningful dialogue depends on engaging the right stakeholders. MOVTT has actively sought this collaborative opportunity since January 2024.

Regarding strategies to interrupt the juvenile-to-adult prison pipeline, MOVTT has developed several innovative approaches. With the support of Warden Edward Borla at the California Correctional Training Facility (CTF), we are advancing a promising initiative titled "Rehabilitation Before Incarceration (RBI)." However, transforming this proposal from concept to reality requires the commitment of dedicated individuals who share our vision of making a meaningful difference in young people's lives.

MOVTT stands ready to collaborate with district attorneys, correctional leaders, and community stakeholders to implement evidence-based solutions that protect our youth and strengthen our communities.

Recent Developments and Community Impact

Over the past several months, our work has expanded in meaningful ways, reaching vulnerable youth and families in our community.

Youth Outreach Initiative

We recently hosted a group of adolescents, ages thirteen to fifteen, for an educational tour of the correctional facility. This immersive experience provided young people with a firsthand look at the realities of incarceration. Our team shared personal testimonies about how unresolved trauma led to substance use and violence, ultimately resulting in imprisonment. We emphasized the critical importance of making positive choices and guided participants toward committing to their personal growth and development. The vulnerability and openness of these young visitors served as a powerful reminder of the impact early intervention can have. We are encouraged by the receptiveness of the participants and look forward to tracking their continued progress.

Parent Engagement Program

We also facilitated a workshop for parents whose children are facing behavioral challenges in school. Drawing from our own lived experiences, we shared insights about what we needed—but didn't receive—from our parents during formative years. Key themes included the importance of verbal affirmation, consistent expressions of love, and physical affection in building a child's sense of self-worth and security. We emphasized that children absorb their parents' words and actions more deeply than adults often realize, making consistent affirmation essential to healthy development.

Educational Milestones

In personal news, I am proud to share that I have earned two A grades on my first writing assignments in my inaugural university course, Family Violence, marking a significant milestone in my educational journey.
