Dr. John Nyunt is a criminal justice scholar, counselor, educator, and reform advocate whose life journey bridges both sides of the justice system. Currently serving as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor at a state correctional facility in Soledad, California, Dr. Nyunt works daily alongside justice-impacted individuals to foster accountability, healing, and growth.
Dr. Nyunt holds a Doctorate in Public Administration, a Master's in Public Administration, and advanced studies in Public Policy and Political Science. He is also a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy — an experience that shaped his approach to leadership, ethics, and public service. Prior to his current role, he served more than twenty-five years in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to Commander and Interim Chief of Police, where he oversaw operations, personnel, policy implementation, and community engagement.
Following his law enforcement career, Dr. Nyunt experienced a profound personal transformation. He spent several years incarcerated across seven different correctional institutions in both state and federal custody. Rather than allowing that chapter to define him, he allowed it to refine him — emerging with a firsthand understanding of the realities faced by incarcerated individuals and an unshakable belief that accountability, redemption, education, and opportunity are the cornerstones of meaningful rehabilitation.
Today, Dr. Nyunt channels both his professional expertise and lived experience into service. As a Professor at Hartnell College, he teaches Concepts of Criminal Law and Criminology, empowering students and justice-impacted individuals to understand and improve the systems that shape their lives. He previously founded and served as Executive Director of the Public Policy Research and Study Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to evidence-based criminal justice reform through research, education, and community engagement.
As Lead Advisor to the Men Of Vision Think Tank, Dr. Nyunt brings a rare convergence of command-level leadership, academic scholarship, and the moral clarity that comes from lived experience — all in service of MOVTT's mission to develop leaders, promote civic engagement, and create lasting opportunities for men to transform their communities.
